David Justice, former NBA player who divorced Halle Berry more than 30 years ago, recently shared one of the reasons why he decided to end the marriage.

Justice, who was married to the actress from 1993 to 1997, revealed why the two divorced during an appearance on the All the Smoke podcast, hosted by former NBA players Matt Barnes and Stephen Jackson.

“My knowledge, my understanding, and my wisdom regarding relationships simply weren’t vast. So, I’m looking at my mother — and I’m a Midwest guy — so, in my mind, I thought a wife at that time should cook, clean, be traditional, you know?” he said.

“So, I think: ‘Okay, if we have kids, is she the one I want to have kids with and build a family?’ Back then, when I was young — she didn’t cook, didn’t clean, didn’t seem very maternal, and that’s when we started having problems.”

The two met in 1993, and it was Berry who proposed to Justice just five months after their first date. “I said yes, but I don’t know if I was really open-hearted. But I didn’t want her to feel bad and say no,” he explained.

Berry and Justice separated in 1996 and divorced in 1997. In 2001, Justice married Rebecca Villalobos, and the couple now has three children.

Meanwhile, Berry has a daughter, Nahla, with ex Gabriel Aubry, and a son, Maceo-Robert, with ex Olivier Martinez. She has been dating singer-songwriter Van Hunt since 2020.

In June this year, Hunt revealed he had proposed to Berry, but the actress had yet to accept or decline the proposal. “It’s just out there, floating,” he said in an interview.
